Are you a college student interested in gaining international hospitality experience in Japan — but worried that your Japanese isn’t good enough?
Winter may actually be one of the best times to consider a hotel internship in Japan.
We recently received an exciting update from our internship partner in Japan. More internship opportunities become available during the busy winter resort season, including positions in Niseko, Hokkaido, one of Japan’s most international winter destinations.
And here’s the great news: for some winter positions, Japanese language proficiency is not required at the time of application.
Why Winter? Why Niseko?
Japan’s ski resorts become extremely busy during the winter months, creating seasonal demand for hospitality staff.
Niseko is particularly unique. Famous around the world for its powder snow, the area attracts a large number of international visitors each winter. At some hotels, more than 90% of guests during the winter season may be international travelers.
This creates opportunities for international students who want to gain hospitality experience in Japan but do not yet speak Japanese fluently.
Our internship partner has developed a strong working relationship with HTM (Hokkaido Tourism Management) in Niseko, and more international interns can now be considered for positions within its hospitality operations.
HTM operates hotels, accommodations, restaurants, and other tourism services in the Niseko area.
No Japanese? You May Still Be Eligible!
One of the biggest concerns we hear from students interested in Japan is:
“I’d love to intern in Japan, but my Japanese isn’t good enough.”
For certain winter-season positions beginning around November or December, Japanese proficiency is not required at the time of application.
Interviews are conducted in English, and if you are accepted, you can begin studying Japanese before arriving in Japan.
Of course, learning some Japanese will make your experience in Japan even more rewarding. But for these particular winter opportunities, being a beginner in Japanese does not necessarily prevent you from applying.

These internship opportunities are primarily available to current college or university students, particularly those studying:
Hospitality or Tourism
Japanese / Japanese Studies
Culinary Arts or related fields
Culinary Students Are Especially Welcome!
Our partner is currently giving priority to culinary students for winter placements.
If you are studying culinary arts and would like to gain international experience in Japan, this could be an especially interesting opportunity.
More Than Just an Internship
Working in Niseko gives you much more than a line on your résumé.
You will experience an international hospitality environment while actually living in Japan. You’ll have the opportunity to work with colleagues and guests from around the world, experience Japanese culture outside of the classroom, and develop the confidence that comes from living and working overseas.
And you’ll be spending the winter in Hokkaido, one of Japan’s most famous winter destinations!
For students studying hospitality, tourism, culinary arts, or Japanese, it can be a unique way to combine professional experience with an unforgettable experience in Japan.

For certain winter placements, you do not need to wait until your Japanese reaches an advanced level before applying.
